Biography

Edward Owens is Civil Engineering Director of Studies and Senior lecturer with an interest in Environmental Engineering, Renewable Energy and Carbon Accounting. He is a graduate of the BSc in Applied Physics at Strathclyde University, Glasgow and upon graduation with a first class honours in 1985 took up a post as a Research Associate in the Department of Offshore Engineering at Heriot-Watt University. In 1990 he was appointed as an experimental officer and took on the role of Technical Manager of the Fluid Loading and Instrumentation Centre. He became a lecturer in Civil Engineering in 2003 and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2006.

Dr Owens was the MSc Director for the Civil Engineering Discipline from 2006 until 2010 when he became the Civil Engineering Director of Studies at Heriot-Watt University. He is also the Programme Director for the MScs in Civil Engineering and Civil Engineering and Construction Management.

Research Interests include many areas of Environmental Engineering including Carbon Accounting, Renewable Energy Policy and Resource Depletion. Consultancy services include wave tank testing of offshore structures, wind tunnel testing and renewable energy optimisation. He became a member of the Institute of Physics in 1993 and a chartered engineer in 1999.
