Biography

  • Sixteen years' experience within the UK University sector as lecturer, educational co-ordinator and teaching fellow.
  • Lecturer in the discipline of quantity surveying, delivering modules in the subject area of construction cost control and design economics at all undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Responsibility for review of programme structures, course development and implementation of new programmes – for example the MSc Quantity Surveying.
  • Active researcher completing work in the area of academic scholarly learning and teaching. Proven and growing publishing record established through articles, books and conference papers throughout academic career.
  • Management and administrative portfolio includes Director of Studies for the Construction Management and Surveying Discipline for the School of the Built Environment, Heriot-Watt University. Responsible for the educational standards and quality of programmes delivered to on-campus(Edinburgh and Dubai), independent distance learning and students completing our programmes through our approved learning partners. Member of the School Management and Finance Group with responsibility to assist the Head of School and Management Group in developing and implementing the School’s strategy. Member of the SBE Learning and Teaching Committee, chaired by the Director of Learning and Teaching with responsibility for delivering high quality leadership in scholarly activities. Member of a number of strategic committees at University level.
  • External impact includes major involvement at senior levels within the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Elected member of International Governing Council, RICS UK Education and Standards Board and Scottish Council as RICS Scotland Honorary Treasurer, becoming RICS Scotland Chairman in 2012/2013. Undertaking RICS accreditation visits as panel chairman and completing Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) interviews for QS practitioners and academics. High level of engagement with construction and surveying practice through industrial liaison and undergraduate CEMENT Mentoring scheme. External Examiner at Northumbria University and University of Westminster.
